This spanner was an important tool in my employment as an industrial paint sprayer for over twenty years, and I carried it in my overalls pocket, ready for use each working day. When I left that job, it was the only thing I wanted as a keepsake. I liked its shape, weight and usefulness, as though it were a part of ‘me’.

I feel I can give up this object now because it’s ceased to have any relevance, and though I still think it has a beauty of sorts as an object, it also reminds me of the terrible nature of my occupation at that time. And of course, it’s ceased to feel as though it could be some part of ‘me’. At some time, and I don’t know when, it became merely an ‘object’. Denis
